Applications

Laser spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique that uses lasers to measure the interaction of light with matter, providing detailed information about the composition and properties of a sample. Its applications span diverse fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science, where it is used for identifying chemical compounds, studying molecular structures, and monitoring atmospheric pollutants.

The advantages of laser spectroscopy include high sensitivity, precision,

and the ability to perform non-destructive, real-time analysis.

This technique is crucial for advancing scientific research and industrial processes, enabling deeper insights and highly accurate data.

An optical frequency comb (OFC), introduced in the late 90’s of the XX century has revolutionized the field of precise measurements of time, frequency and dimensions. For the development of the frequency comb,

Theodor W. Hänsch and John Hall were awarded by the Nobel Prize in physics in 2005. The “heart” of the frequency comb – a mode-locked laser, forms in the spectral domain a regular structure of thousands of modes, equally spaced by the pulse repetition frequency.

Optical frequency combs in the visible and near-infrared spectral range have enabled the development of, e.g., ultra-precise optical-atomic clocks, which are currently the most accurate known time standards. They find applications in precise frequency measurements, laser spectroscopy, precise dimensional metrology, or calibration of spectrographs for extra-solar planet search.

The potential of optical frequency combs in laser spectroscopy

has already been demonstrated for

high-resolution precision spectroscopy, time-resolved chemical sensing, flame characterization, environmental research, monitoring of production processes, and human breath analysis.

To fully exploit the benefits of frequency comb spectroscopy, access to mid-IR comb sources is needed, which allows for addressing strong fundamental molecular transitions. This translates into higher concentration detection sensitivity and simultaneous access to transitions of many species.

At Mode-Locked Technology, we specialize in creating the most advanced and reliable optical frequency combs in different spectral ranges (from VIS to NIR), delivering unparalleled precision and stability. Our products enable ultra-high-resolution measurements, enhancing the accuracy and quality of your spectral analysis.
